DAILY SUMMARY OF AIR OPERATIONS No. 82.
Sunset 5th January to Sunset 6th January, 1945
R.A.F. Bomber Command Lancastors and Mosquitoos during the night 5/6th
January made 2 heavy and concentrated attacks an HANOVER City. Troop
Concentrations at HOUFFALIZE were also successfully attacked. Two attacks
were made on BERLIN by Mosquitoos and NEUSS M/Yd. and CASTROP/RAUXEL Tar
Plant also bombed. There were no operations during the day 6th January.
Eighth Air Force Fortresses and Liberators escorted by Mustangs
attacked 6 M/Ys, 4 Road and Rail Bridges, a Communication Centre and
several targets of opportunity in W. GERMANY. Results were mainly
unobserved due cloud. Fighter Bombers attacked SIEGEN M/Y.
Second British T.A.F. Mosquitoos during the night 5/6 January harassed
enemy movement in the areas ZULPICH-EUSKIRCHEN-MAYEN-CLERVAUX and carried
out Armed Reconnaissances over the ARDENNES Area. During the day 6 January
Fighter Bombers carrying out Pre-arranged Support Operations successfully
attacked Defended Areas at SCHOUEN and a D.F. Station. Armed
Reconnaissances were also flown over
LINGEN-RHEINE-OSNBRUCK-MUNSTER-HAMM-BREMEN Areas.
Ninth Air Force did not operate during the night 5/6 January due
adverse weather conditions. The weather during the day 6 January was
little better. A small ferce of Medium Bombers attacked the City of PRUM
with unobserved results, and Fighter Bombers detailed to attack a Bridge
in the RHURBERG area were recalled due weather.
1st U.S.T.A.C. did not operate during the night 5/6 January due
unfavourable weather conditions. Armed Reconnaissances were carried out in
daylight 6 January by a small Force of Thonderbolts over the STRASBURG
Area. Defensive Patrols and Tractical Reconnaissances were also flown.
R.A.F. Fighter Command Mosquitoos carried out Intruder Patrols over A/F's
in occupied HOLLAND and also GERMANY during the nicht 5/6 January. An
HE.111 was destroyed and an u/i E/A damaged. Lights on a railway S. of
MEPPEL were attacked and extinguished and a small fire started. Spitfires
detailed to attack Rocket targets in the HAGUE area early in the afternoon
of 6 January had to return early to base due bad weather. Mustangs
escorted A/C of R.A.F. Coastel Command on an Anti-Shipping patrol to
NORWAY.
R.A.F. Coastel Command A/C carried out Anti-U Bout and Anti-Shipping
Patrols. A barge sighted off the Coast of NORWAY was successfully attacked.
Convoy and Air Sea Rescue patrols were also flown.
Castor despatched a medium force of Dakotas on supply and evacuation
missions. 38 Group A/C dropped supplies over areas of HOLLAND.
